Best Large Desk Mats

Measure the desk, then decide how much of it you want covered, because this category is a ladder of fixed sizes and picking the wrong rung is the main regret. Roughly 23.5 by 11.8 inches covers a keyboard and mouse and nothing else; around 31.5 by 15.7 and 35.4 by 15.7 inches suit a standard desk with room for a notebook; 36 by 17 and 47.2 by 15.7 span most of a 120 cm desk; and 48 by 24 inches covers a deep desk entirely, including under the monitor stand. Depth is the figure to check twice, since a 12-inch mat looks wide in a photograph and stops just behind the keyboard. Surface material sets the character. Woven cloth over foam gives the smoothest mouse glide, is quiet, and absorbs a spill straight into the padding, which is why the cloth mats worth having are treated to be water repellent and can be washed. Leather and PU wipe clean in a second and feel better under a forearm, but a mouse tracks slightly worse on them and they mark. Stitched or heat-sealed edges are the single best indicator of how long the mat lasts, because an unbound cloth edge frays within months. A textured rubber underside stops the mat travelling. Expect any rolled mat to arrive with a curl that needs a day flat and a few heavy books, and expect large printed designs to look busier in person than on screen.
