Anti-fatigue mat

A cushioned mat that reduces the strain of standing still on hard flooring, often used with a standing desk.

An anti-fatigue mat is a cushioned floor mat, typically made of foam, gel, or rubber, designed to be stood on for extended periods. The padding encourages tiny, constant shifts in posture and muscle engagement that would not happen while standing on a hard floor, which is thought to reduce the fatigue that builds up in the legs, feet, and lower back.

These mats are most useful paired with a standing desk or desk converter, since standing without one directly on tile, concrete, or laminate flooring tends to feel noticeably harder on the feet within an hour or two. Thickness and firmness vary a lot between products, and a mat that is too soft can feel unstable underfoot, especially in shoes with a hard sole.

A mat that is too thick can also become a tripping hazard near a rolling chair, and beveled edges help reduce that risk. People who alternate frequently between sitting and standing sometimes find a mat gets in the way of chair casters, so placement relative to the desk's sit and stand zones is worth planning before buying one.
